Lang Legs
Designed by Robert Stephenson, the bridge opened in 1849 and was known by locals at the time as ‘Lang Legs’, referring to the pairs of masonry piers which support the spans of the bridge.
A bridge familiar to the artist throughout his upbringing and adult life, this foreboding structure proved continual inspiration for artwork within it's shadows, depths and unique perspective.
